Dead or expired UK trade marks
This page combines two related UK IPO statuses into a single view: Expired marks within the six-month grace period after a missed renewal, and Dead marks already removed from the register. Together they represent the full set of registered UK trade marks no longer in force, currently 10,001 records. Often referred to as dead or expired trademarks.
What does “dead or expired” mean on the UK trade marks register?
The distinction sits along a single timeline. A trade mark first reaches Expired status when the ten-year renewal fee is not paid by the deadline. The owner then has six months to pay a late fee and restore the registration. If they do not, the mark moves to Dead status and is formally removed from the register, with only limited restoration possible after that.
Combining the two statuses gives the broadest view of UK marks no longer enforceable today. It is the right starting point for clearance work where the precise date of removal matters less than the fact that the registration is no longer live.
How is this set different from “abandoned” or “surrendered”?
| Status | Reached register? | Trigger | Revivable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expired | Yes | Renewal fee not paid by deadline | Yes, within six-month grace period |
| Dead | Yes | Removed after grace period | Restoration possible in limited circumstances |
| Surrendered | Yes | Owner voluntarily filed TM23 | No |
| Abandoned (Refused / Withdrawn) | No | Application rejected or withdrawn pre-registration | N/A — never registered |
