UK IPO Trade Mark Data: What's in the Open Data Release?
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) published a bulk release of trade mark registration data under the Open Government Licence v3.0, making it freely available for anyone to use, share, and build upon.
What's Included
The dataset contains two files:
- Domestic UK applications — trade marks filed directly with the UK IPO
- International registrations — marks designating the UK through the Madrid Protocol
Together, these cover hundreds of thousands of trade mark records.
Data Fields
Each record includes:
- Trade mark number — the unique IPO reference (e.g., UK00003195411)
- Mark text — the word elements of the mark
- Owner details — name, postcode area, region, and country
- Status — the current legal status (Registered, Expired, Dead, etc.)
- Mark type — Word, Figurative, 3D, Colour, Sound, etc.
- Key dates — filing, publication, registration, expiry, and renewal due dates
- Nice Classification — which of the 45 classes the mark covers
Limitations
The bulk data release has some important limitations to be aware of:
- Coverage period: The dataset covers applications filed before 31 August 2016, with renewal data going back to 1878 (excluding marks that died before 1 April 1996).
- Last updated: The bulk release was last updated in February 2018. More recent changes are not reflected.
- No images: Figurative marks (logos, device marks) are recorded by type but the actual images are not included in the dataset.
- Owner data: Only the area-level postcode is provided, not the full address. Multiple owners may appear as separate rows for the same mark.
Checking Current Status
Because the bulk data may be outdated, we always recommend verifying a mark's current status on the live IPO register. We link to the IPO register entry from every trade mark page on this site.
Our service makes this data searchable and browsable, with individual pages for every mark and class-based navigation. Start searching.
